\u201cWho will care for my child when I\u2019m not around anymore?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow can I best support my child with special needs?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions often weigh heavily on the minds of the parents of our Jesus Club (JC) members. This year, as part of journeying alongside our members and their caregivers both spiritually but also practically, we ran caregiver sharing sessions to address some of these questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JC volunteer and full-time social worker, Fang Qing, conducted 2 sessions in May and July, the first on Long-Term Care Planning, and the second on a Caregiver Resource Toolkit. In the first session, Fang Qing led caregivers through the different aspects of planning for their child\u2019s long-term care \u2013 including legal, financial and everyday-living planning \u2013 and also introduced resources they could tap on. In the second session, Fang Qing walked caregivers through the community services available to support persons with special needs, and guided caregivers to identify what would be relevant for their child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These practical sessions were warmly received by caregivers. We were heartened to see that what started out as a volunteer sharing her expertise ended up as an open-floor caregiver sharing, with parents exchanging advice and lived experiences. They shared encouragement, personal tips and established new friendships. We believe that a caregiver support network is invaluable in the journey of caring for persons with special needs, and we\u2019re grateful that JC can be a platform for such a network to be established. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We concluded our sessions by reminding one another of God\u2019s promise in Philippians 4:6-7: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the anxiety of outliving our children with special needs is real. But instead of giving in to our worries, we can give it all to God. God\u2019s promise to us is that his peace will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. In Christ, we have an unshakable peace or relationship with the God who\u2019s in control of all things, and who\u2019s willing and able to help us in all that we ask of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
