“We hope that everyone in church will be involved in Jesus Club.”
This was something that had been impressed in the hearts of the core team members when we started Jesus Club in Leng Kwang Baptist Church 2 years ago. And by the grace of God, we were able to catch glimpses of this hope one Sunday morning in April.
The children’s ministry and a young adult cell group were planning to pack appreciation packages to celebrate the mothers in our church on Mothers’ Day. And something prompted one of the leaders to ask the Jesus Club leaders if they could do anything to appreciate the mothers in Jesus Club. Without batting an eyelid, we asked if they could also do something for the fathers (since we usually do not have sessions in June). And that became a first step for the church to get involved in ministry to persons with intellectual disability.
Before we started, Pastor Augustus had the opportunity to share with the children and young adults what Jesus Club is all about and why Jesus Club is so important to the church—because everyone matters to God. After that, everyone had a wonderful time packing the appreciation packages.
We had the privilege of handing out the care packages to the caregivers, and we could see joy and love in the eyes of the caregivers. And that brought the volunteers joy too. The words of Jesus ring true when He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35).
