There’s a saying that starting something is easy, but keeping it going is hard. We wouldn’t say that starting a Jesus Club (JC) is easy, but after 13 years of running JC, we can certainly attest that keeping a club going is nothing short of a miracle! One of the great joys of serving in JC over the years has been to test and approve the truth of these words, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). For despite the perennial challenges we face – disappointment when members leave the faith, discouragement when volunteers leave the ministry – we’ve experienced in greater measure the power of God at work to sustain His work through us.
So it’s with much praise and thanksgiving that we celebrate JC at Leng Kwang Baptist Church (LKBC) turning 3 this July! Thank God for his provision and sustenance and for the wonderful blessing of being a channel of his gospel and love to his people.
We interviewed Helen, Caleb’s mum, and we thank God for her sharing that gives us just the encouragement we need to persevere as we enter our 4th year of running JC at LKBC.
Interview with Helen
Q: How did you and Caleb come to know about Jesus Club?
A friend invited me to attend a Chinese service with the intention of inviting my parents as well. It was there that I got to know a brother-in-Christ who is a social worker. He shared with me about this ministry that reaches out to adults with special needs and asked if I would be interested in joining. I believe it is the Lord who led me to this group of caring individuals.
Q: Has Caleb made any new friends at Jesus Club?
Jesus Club has created opportunities for Caleb to open up and communicate. Previously, he was socially isolated, but now he is more open to meeting people and is less shy. He is able to be himself around people who understand his limitations and show him patience.
Q: How do you think Jesus Club has helped Caleb in his faith journey?
Through the simple teachings, such as the parables of Jesus, Caleb has been able to learn and understand at a level that is accessible to him. That is the beauty of it. He is able to appreciate and understand more about what is written in the Bible. The games and art and craft activities have also helped reinforce his understanding of the Bible passages. All the volunteers try their best to teach in ways that the participants can understand, and they put in a lot of effort.
Q: Do you have any hopes or suggestions for Jesus Club?
All the volunteers have sacrificed so much time and effort to make this ministry a success. Thank the Lord for making this possible. Our children can feel the love of the Lord through all of you. I appreciate the time the volunteers spend talking to them, listening to them, and allowing them to express their thoughts. Thank you.
